Jacksonville braces for storms: News4JAX is tracking afternoon storms

Hot stormy afternoons linger through Friday before a weekend cool-down, according to The Weather Authority

Showers and thunderstorms tracking across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s another afternoon of weather watching with active storms building around Jacksonville and the surrounding areas of southeast Georgia. Using Exact Track 4D radar, The Weather Authority is monitoring showers and thunderstorms already sparking up, with some carrying gusts of 40 miles per hour or more.

While none of these storms had met the criteria for severe warnings as of the last update, the gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall can still create hazardous conditions.

Specific locations such as Darien, St. Simons, and neighborhoods near the marshes are will experience the first wave.

There are also downpours moving toward the Duval, Verde, and Tahoma areas.

Short-term and extended forecast: Heat, storms, and a weekend cool-down

Looking ahead, expect the muggy, hot pattern to stick around through Friday. Temperatures are holding near 89 degrees, with “feels like” numbers pushing 100 degrees, driven by sticky humidity that doesn’t let up even in the morning hours.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to become more widespread each afternoon, especially after 2 p.m. Thursday brings the first of two cold fronts, with a stronger front set for Friday. These fronts are likely to deliver some relief as they usher in slightly cooler and drier air for the weekend, dropping highs to the upper 80s by Saturday and Sunday and cutting storm chances significantly. Early next week, temperatures are predicted to rebound into the lower 90s with sunny skies returning.

Evening lows will hover in the low to mid 70s, and “mostly cloudy” skies are expected overnight.

Advice and safety for outdoor and marine activities

Heated days and daily storms mean timing is everything for plans outside. Get yard work or outdoor activities wrapped up by 2 p.m., when storms start to fire up across the area. Boaters should take caution—gusty winds and a risk for thunderstorms can develop quickly, making late-day trips hazardous, especially if anchored out in the marinas or near the coast.

With humidity sticking around even in the early hours, it’s wise to keep extra water on hand and plan for breaks if you’re spending time outside.
