Northeast Florida’s summer pattern arrives: Thunderstorms and searing heat in this week’s forecast

News4JAX meteorologist Richard Nunn details what to expect: hot afternoons, pop-up storms, and changes ahead for the weekend

Hot, humid, and stormy weather

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The classic summer weather pattern is back in Northeast Florida. Temperatures are starting out with comfortable lows in the early morning, quickly climbing into the 90s by midday, with humidity driving “feels like” readings close to the triple digits.

Outdoor plans? Get them done early, while it’s cool.

With the Exact Track 4D radar constantly scanning, viewers are alerted “faster than ever” when storms threaten. On recent days, Nunn noted that heat indices, or “feels like” values, in locations like Mayport and Gainesville were nearing 99 to 100 degrees, while Jacksonville itself felt like 95 degrees even along the riverfront.

Thunderstorm timing and rainfall expectations

Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to continue over the next several days. The Weather Authority has tracked storms developing along I-75 and through southern and central communities like Marion, Putnam, and Alachua counties. Lightning activity was recorded at over 80 strikes during one recent monitoring window, with downpours pushing through neighborhoods such as Cisco, Satsuma, Hunter, Buffalo Bluff, and others within roughly 5 to 20 minutes of detection.

The highest storm chances are Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday looking like the wettest day of the week. Predicted rainfall totals reach up to about 1 inch for parts of southeast Georgia, and around a half inch in most northeast Florida neighborhoods. As always, a few locations could see higher amounts under heavier storms.

Rain and storm chances are expected to ease for Friday, tapering off as the weekend approaches.

Frontal boundary brings weekend changes

A frontal boundary will settle across the region in the coming days, keeping weather patterns “unsettled.” However, a stronger front is expected to move through between Friday and Saturday, pushing much of the rain and thunderstorm activity further south. As a result, weekend conditions are forecast to become slightly cooler and a bit drier, with temperatures trending closer to seasonal averages.

Highs should drop from the mid-90s to the upper 80s by Saturday and Sunday, according to The Weather Authority’s 7-day outlook. Still, forecasters remind everyone to remain weather aware as afternoon storms are common during this time of year.
