Heat and dry conditions lead off the holiday weekend

Humidity and rain chances rising for Sunday and beyond

The forecast calls for a shift Sunday. Humidity is expected to build, bringing higher chances of afternoon storms and scattered showers. Rain chances in these areas could climb to around 30 percent, most likely after 3 p.m.

By Memorial Day on Monday and through midweek, wetter and stormier conditions are likely to become more routine.

Air quality alerts and beach safety

Saturday’s heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it comes with a health alert. Air quality has taken a hit due to high ozone levels, especially around Jacksonville. Saturday’s air quality is classified as “Unhealthy for some” in Duval County today, which mainly affects sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions.

Air quality is forecast to improve to “Moderate” for Sunday and Monday, but those in affected groups should still take care if spending extended time outdoors.

If you’re heading to the ocean, keep in mind there’s a moderate rip current risk at area beaches. Water temperatures are hovering in the 80s, and wave heights are expected to be small (1 to 2 feet Saturday, rising slightly to 3 feet Sunday). The UV index is very high, so sun protection is strongly recommended. Low tide at Jacksonville Beach is around 12:21 p.m., making it a great time for a morning jog on the hard-packed sand.
