Thunderstorms arrive: Airport Weather Warning Issued

Some are severe with gusty winds and hail potential

.

A strong line of thunderstorms is bearing down on Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia this afternoon, prompting multiple warnings from the National Weather Service, including a special alert for Jacksonville International Airport.

An Airport Weather Warning has been issued for JAX Airport until 3:00 PM EDT, with aviation hazards expected to include:

  • Wind gusts of 35 knots or greater
  • Hail up to ½ inch in diameter

These conditions may result in flight delays and temporary ground stops, especially for arriving aircraft. Travelers should check with their airline for real-time updates.

In addition to the airport alert, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 2:45 PM EDT for parts of Duval, Nassau, and Baker Counties in Florida, as well as Ware and Charlton Counties in Georgia.

As of 2:06 PM, the storm was located about 8 miles northwest of St. George, tracking southeast at 35 mph. This trajectory takes it toward Callahan, Hilliard, and Bryceville — areas that should brace for:

  • Wind gusts up to 60 mph
  • Penny-sized hail

Radar indicates this storm is capable of damaging winds, particularly to trees, power lines, siding, and lightweight structures. Outdoor activities should be suspended immediately, and residents are urged to seek shelter indoors, away from windows.

The storm is expected to impact key communities including:

  • Hilliard
  • Callahan
  • Bryceville
  • Nassau Village-Ratliff
