JACKSONVILLE, FLA – A Tornado Watch was issued for parts of North Florida and Georgia.
The Tornado Watch is in effect until 6 p.m. for the following areas:
- North Florida
- Southern and Southeast Georgia
- Southern South Carolina
- Nearby coastal waters
What you need to know
- A few tornadoes are possible this afternoon.
- Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph could occur in some of the stronger storms.
What this means
This isn’t a tornado warning yet, but conditions are favorable for storms that could produce tornadoes and strong winds. The atmosphere is unstable and very supportive of dangerous storms.
Who’s affected
Right now, there is not a high risk for severe weather around Jacksonville. Rain is expected to move into NE Florida after 6 pm when the watch expires. The potential for severe weather targets inland north Florida and parts of the Panhandel and Waycross, GA.
This watch zone stretches roughly 60 miles east and west of a line from northeast Georgia to just south of Tallahassee, Florida. If you’re in this area, stay alert and be ready to take action if warnings are issued.
What to do
- Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
- Have a safe place ready to go to in case a tornado warning is issued—ideally, an interior room on the lowest floor.
- Keep an eye on the sky and don’t ignore severe thunderstorm warnings—they can quickly escalate.
