Possible snow or sleet tonight? Freeze Warning, Cold Weather Advisory, 154-Year-Old Record Broken

Freezing Temperatures Continue

. (.)

A weak area of low pressure will move across Florida, toward the Atlantic tonight and early Thursday morning. Models show a slight chance, around 10 - 20 percent for showers, mainly over the water. If the showers start early, any showers west of the St. Johns River, could potentially produce a few flurries or possibly sleet.

A very cold night ahead with single digit windchill temperatures tonight, Thursday morning. The below normal temperatures and Freeze Warnings will continue through the weekend. A warming trend will start next week.

The cold temperatures today, which are already falling, will lead to freezing temperatures as early as sunset. This will lead to refreezing of snow-covered and wet roads. Expect frozen and ice covered roads throughout southeast Georgia and inland areas of northeast Florida, near and along I-10 north.

Records: It only took a tenth of an inch of snow, technically sleet, to set a record today. To our north, Alma, GA received 5.00 inches of snow, the highest amount since records began 1938 and here in Jacksonville, we set a record for 0.1 inch of accumulation of sleet just after 5 am. This is the fifth highest “snowfall” since records started in 1871.

Freeze warning: 7 pm - 10 am

Cold Weather Advisory: 7 am - 10 am

Thursday: A Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory continues through 10 am. Near record to record lows will be possible across inland areas of southeast Georgia. Windchill values will dip to the single digits and 20s through late morning. Under mostly cloudy skies the morning lows will start in the teens to 20s inland, 30s along the beaches. Afternoon highs in the 30s to 40s. Wind NW 5-15 mph.

Sunny skies Friday and Saturday with near record lows and below normal afternoon highs. It will be a little warmer Sunday as the skies become partly cloudy.

Warmer temperatures are expected next week with 70s possible by Wednesday.

Sunrise: 7:22 a.m. Sunset: 5:53 p.m.
