The winter storm has passed but the chill is on for the next 5 days. When will we thaw out?

Thursday's Warning

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When will the freezing temperatures end? We’re hearing that from everyone after the frozen January that we’ve already experienced across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

While this won’t go down in history as the coldest January ever recorded, it feels like it should be.

With historical snowfall in our region on Tuesday, Jan. 21, folks are ready for a return to normal and that will feel like a warmup.

The coldest day in Jacksonville, Florida, ever, occurred on Jan. 21, 1985, when the temperature dropped to 7 degrees. This is the lowest temperature ever recorded in Jacksonville. So far, Jacksonville has recorded nine days at/below freezing in January.

  • Jan. 3: 32
  • Jan. 5: 32

  • Jan. 22: 31

So, back to the question: When will the freezing temperatures end?

As we look ahead to the last week of January, normal temperatures are being forecast for Monday, Jan. 27 with a (normal) high of 65 degrees and a low that morning of (just below the 46-degree normal) 42 degrees. Thankfully, this normal trend sticks around through Tuesday. Some sources are even seeing 70s returning by mid-week.

7-day Forecast

However, don’t remove your plant covers yet. At least four more mornings of freezing low temperatures are in the forecast between now and Monday, and the highs won’t budge much out of the 40s until at least Saturday.

While the highs over the weekend will be pleasant and the sunshine will be very welcomed, the mornings will be cold and hazardous. An inland hard freeze is likely Friday and Saturday mornings.

Continue to be diligent about your people, pets, pipes, plants and fire safety. Dangerous wind chill factors remain a priority, as well, with Freeze Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories in place for portions of northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia from 7 p.m. Wednesday evening until 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service said, that for the Freeze Warning, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 19 degrees are expected and for the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 15 degrees are expected.
