A winter storm is set to impact the region, prompting a Weather Authority Alert on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The winter storm will bring a mix of rain, snow, and sleet, with temperatures currently at 39 degrees in Jacksonville and 35 degrees in Waycross. As the storm continues into the night, heavy sleet and about an inch of rain are expected, creating hazardous conditions for Wednesday morning. The potential for black ice is high due to low temperatures and refreezing.
A low-pressure system from the Gulf will help push out the wintry mix by Wednesday morning, but additional rain is expected on Thursday. Freezing rain totals are expected to impact areas like Jacksonville, McClinney, and Lake City, with power outages possible due to ice accumulation on power lines and trees.
Snowfall is expected to be significant in Waycross, Brunswick, and Valdosta, with most of it occurring overnight. While there is excitement about the snow, the freezing rain poses a serious threat, and residents are urged to monitor the situation closely.
