Breezy and clear with a cold windchill to start the day

Prolonged period of cold, Protect those Ps

. (.)

It is time to protect those Ps again. Plants, Pipes, Pets, People and with a Hard Freeze possible, Pools too.

Starting tomorrow and through the weekend we will have well below-normal temperatures prompting Freeze, Frost and Cold Weather Advisories and Warnings.

There is potential for a Hard Freeze for inland areas Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Tonight: Clearing, cold and windy. Windchill values in the 20s!

Tuesday: Sunny and cold with a bitter breeze in the morning. Temperatures will be hovering around the freeze mark early tomorrow. Factor in the wind and the temperatures will feel like 20s. Sunny skies with afternoon highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Wind: NW 10-15 mph early then decreasing to 5-10 mph.

Wednesday - Friday: Cold morning temperatures with Freeze, Frost and possible Hard Freeze conditions. Another cold front arrives Friday with increasing rain chances.

Multiple mornings with freezing to subfreezing temperatures are expected this week. It is time to exercise caution and practice safety measures for space heaters and fireplaces as we remember the five P’s of cold weather safety.

People: Dress in layers. Try to stay out of the wind. Be a good neighbor and check on young children and the elderly as they are the most sensitive to cold weather. If the temperature cannot be maintained at home, make temporary arrangements to stay elsewhere, including shelters or with friends and family.

Pets: Bring outdoor pets inside or give them a warm shelter to stay in.

Plants: Cover cold sensitive plants to protect them from the cold temperatures and frost. Cloth blankets, frost blankets are best. Try to avoid plastic sheets as covers.

Pipes: Cover pipes and allow outdoor faucets to slowly drip to prevent from freezing and breaking. If you have a pump-house, make sure it is covered or insulated. We used to leave a lamp with a bright light on in our pumphouse for added heat and protection.

Pools: Leave the pump on all night or shut it off and leave it off until the temperatures are above freezing.

Practice Fire Safety: Use safe heating sources indoors. Do not use fuel-burning devices such as grills; they release carbon monoxide, which is a deadly gas. Also, use space heaters as directed in the instructions and make sure they are away from beds, furniture and blankets.

Sunrise: 7:24 a.m. Sunset: 5:41 p.m.
