Middle school boy critically injured in e-bike crash in St. Johns County

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – After a witness shared photos with News4JAX of a boy being treated by St. Johns County Fire Rescue following an e-bike crash Monday night, the fire department confirmed that the crash resulted in a child being critically injured.

SJCFR told News4JAX that the crash was reported around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Race Track Road in Julington Creek Plantation and “involved a middle school age child.”

The child had to be airlifted to a local trauma center.

The witness who shared the photos said the boy remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.

The crash is being investigated by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Additionally, St. John’s County confirmed with News4JAX that e-bike usage is something the county has been looking into, and that the County Attorney’s Office sent a preliminary e-bike ordinance to the Sheriff’s Office for review.

The legislation will go to the County Commission for consideration, and the public will be allowed to provide comment before any vote is held.

News4JAX spoke with some residents about E-bike usage in the Julington Creek area.

“I’m always very careful when turning in here because a little kid was coming down the road and I knew he wasn’t going to stop to look,” said Pam Livermore.
