PALATKA, Fla. – The city of Palatka could soon begin installing speed cameras in school zones.
The automated speed cameras will make it easier to catch drivers speeding through school zones.

Drivers who go just 10 mph above the school zone speed limit will receive a $100.
City commissioners voted unanimously on the first reading to move forward with a proposal to bring them to the city.
Right now, the ordinance is in its beginning phase, but the proposal has the support of Palata’s commissioners and the city’s police department.
Once approved, the speed cameras will be active 30 minutes before school starts and 30 minutes after dismissal.
In 2023, Florida passed a bill allowing local governments to use automated systems to enforce speed limits in school zones.
But cities that use the systems must hold a public awareness campaign at least 30 school days before enforcement kicks in.
In a 2022 survey by AAA, 38% of Floridians admitted to speeding in active school zones and 32% acknowledged using their hand-held cellphones while driving in these zones.
Neptune Beach recently introduced automatic speed cameras in school zones and will start issuing tickets after April 14.
