Fiery crash involving 2 semis on I-10 leaves 1 driver dead: FHP

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A semi driver was killed Thursday morning when his tractor-trailer rear-ended another and caught fire on I-10 eastbound near Cecil Commerce Parkway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said a 45-year-old man from New York was driving a semi on I-10 East around 5:45 a.m. when he slowed for traffic near Cecil Commerce Parkway.

Another semi coming up behind him in the same lane didn’t slow down and slammed into his trailer, catching fire.

Troopers said the driver of the semi that caught fire wasn’t able to get out of the cab and died at the scene. FHP has not released any identifying information about the driver who died.

The driver from New York, who was wearing his seat belt, was not hurt, troopers said.

All eastbound lanes of I-10 near Cecil Commerce Parkway were closed for hours Thursday as troopers investigated the crash and cleared the road.

Traffic was being diverted onto State Road 23, and drivers were urged to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.

As of 11:30 a.m., FHP was still working to clear the scene and reopen the road.
