JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman died Friday morning when her car flipped after she drove off the road at the Blanding Boulevard entrance ramp from Roosevelt Boulevard, across from Florida State College at Jacksonville.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the woman’s Toyota Camry hopped the curb at the ramp and ran into a light pole around 1:40 a.m. Friday. The impact caused the car to flip.

Paramedics responded and took the woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Police said she was the only one in the car and it doesn’t appear that she was impaired but speed might be a factor in the crash.

Sgt. Robert Hungerford also pointed out that there was water on the road from rain earlier in the night.

“In those conditions, slow your speeds,” he said. “The biggest contributor to fatalities is speed in general. Ten miles per hour can be the difference in an injury or a death. Just 10 mph can make a big difference, so a little bit slower will result in less damage and the possibility of survivability.”

Hungerford said this is the 144th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.

“One is too many,” he said, although he acknowledged that the total is down considerably from the same time last year. “That’s good. I would just say that as you’re driving, be mindful of your surroundings.”
