2 women killed in head-on crash with pickup in Columbia County: FHP

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – Two women were killed Wednesday night in a head-on crash with a pickup truck on U.S. 441 at County Road 778 in Columbia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The women were in an SUV headed south on Highway 441 when they crossed into oncoming traffic near the CR 778 intersection, troopers said.

According to the FHP report, a pickup truck being driven by a 62-year-old man was stopped in the left turn lane on the northbound side of the intersection, and another pickup being driven by a 19-year-old man was headed north on U.S. 441, approaching the CR 778 intersection.

Troopers said the SUV sideswiped the truck that was stopped in the turn lane, continued heading the wrong way and then slammed head-on into the other pickup.

The 72-year-old woman driving the SUV and her 64-year-old passenger, both from Fort White, were taken to different hospitals. Neither had been wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Both women died at the hospital.

The man driving the truck that was sideswiped was not hurt, troopers said. The 19-year-old, who is from Lake Butler, took himself to the hospital with minor injuries, according to FHP.

Both men were wearing seat belts.
