St. Augustine Commissioners to form committee for flooding management
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. โ St. Augustine commissioners are forming a committee to help minimize the impacts of flooding throughout the historic city. The city has been advertising applications for community members to join a citizen advisory committee. Broadly, the advisory group would be tasked with creating goals to minimize flooding impacts. Commissioners was to meet Monday morning to formalize the goals for the committee. The city commissioners will select the advisory members on Nov. 9.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Quick update the norโeaster... All of the Coastal Warnings continue including: Coastal Flood Warning, Gale Warning, Heavy Surf, Extreme Rip Current Risk. The norโeaster which rolled in on Saturday morning has shifted from the rains of Saturday to windy, tidal flooding conditions that will persist for days. Winds have been gusty and generally under 30 mph in inland areas, but those winds have been much higher along the coast with 43 mph winds at Mayport and 48 mph winds at Marineland. Tidal flooding has been taken place at high tide and these high tides will continue to run 1 to 1-1/2 feet above normal high tide through this work week. Want to read more on the norโeaster?
Turn around, donโt drown: Glynn County streets flooded after 7 inches of rain
BRUNSWICK, Ga. โ Drivers in Glynn County need to heed the warning โTurn around, donโt drownโ this morning after a storm system dumped 7 inches of rain in the area, according to the National Weather Service. News4Jaxโs Brittany Muller is surveying areas overrun with water in Storm Track and saw two vehicles that stalled in water, one near the middle of an intersection. The parking lots of the Winn-Dixie and Waffle House in Brunswick are flooded out; as is F-J Torras Causeway and Glynn Avenue. A flood warning for Glynn County expired at 5:30 a.m, but as high-tide is expected at 8 this morning, waters may rise higher.

Flooding on Jacksonvilleโs Westside raises questions about cityโs response
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ After heavy rains pelted Jacksonville and caused some flash flooding across part of the Westside on Monday night, many are questioning the cityโs response. People like Jim Williams have been complaining about major flooding since retention ponds were covered and replaced with pipes. The flooding issue is something that the Jacksonville City Council is working on. A resiliency committee has been meeting about the flooding problems and is scheduled to meet again on Wednesday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is also working with the city to buy up flood-prone property.
Survey: 88% of residents say not enough being done to make Duval County more resilient to storm impacts
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The citys resiliency committee on Thursday heard the results of a survey done among Duval County residents as to Jacksonvilles readiness to deal with the threat from storms and hurricanes. More than 700 people were asked if their community was doing enough to address the issues of sea levels rising and make the city more resilient to storm impacts, and the survey shows 88% said no. The problem is getting enough of the community to buy in, in order to get the funding to do it. The resiliency committee was formed after back-to-back years brought Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. The survey also found 90% of people said a regional compact is needed to deal with the challenges of future storm impacts.
Japan floods leave up to 34 dead, many at nursing homes
Heavy rain in the Kumamoto region triggered flooding and mudslides Saturday and left dozens still being stranded at their homes and other facilities. Helicopters and boats rescued more people from their homes in the Kumamoto region. Overall, 18 people were confirmed dead, while 16 others, including those at the nursing home, were presumed dead. More than 200,000 residents in Kumamoto prefecture were urged to evacuate following pounding rains on Friday evening and into Saturday. Nearly 6,000 homes in Kumamoto were still without electricity Sunday, according to the Kyushu Electric Power Co.
New app shows hidden flood risk for properties across the country
The new tool, Flood Factor, estimates the risk and chances of a property seeing flooding. For the entire country, the model shows at least 14.6 million properties are at substantial risk. The Federal Emergency Management Agencyโs (FEMA) estimates show 8.7 million properties have the same risk. The maps show properties at risk of flooding and estimates the severity if flooding were to occur. The app shows more than 48,000 locations are at risk for flooding in Jacksonville, alone.
Residents brace for flooding in Clay County after emergency management warning
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. โ Residents in one of the most infamous spots for flooding in Northeast Florida are bracing themselves yet again for floodwaters spill into homes and city streets. At a news conference Sunday night, Clay County Emergency Management warned residents near the area along Aquarius Concourse to expect minor flooding to hit the area around 8 a.m. Monday morning. The emergency management department said they expect Black Creek to be outflow and back to normal by Monday evening or into Tuesday morning. Until then, officials want residents to remove RVs, trailers, and other structures away from water. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult.

Even though the worst of the rains are over, any significant rain will add to travel issues and some additional flooding.

Woman kayaks to floating home swept away by flood to recover motherโs ashes
SANFORD, Michigan โ When the massive flooding overtook mid-Michigan earlier this week, Kathy Parsch was the last person to evacuate the village of Sanford. Nearly 11,000 mid-Michigan residents were forced to evacuate their homes due to a massive flooding emergency triggered by dam failures on Tuesday. Now Parsch and her friends are looking for her home in Sanford after it was swept away by the floods. Parsch and her friends found kayaks laying around and got into the water. The Sanford woman was on a mission to recover her motherโs ashes that were left inside the home when she evacuated.
Orange Park hopes to protect town from major flood event
ORANGE PARK, Fla. The town of Orange Park is making a game plan of how to stop the town from flooding if another major storm were to hit. It just wrapped up an in depth study of the areas around Orange Park that are prone to flooding and need work. If you talk to people who live around Orange Park Junior High School, theyll tell you that theyve seen their share of flooding. Its been really two years in the making ever since Hurricane Irma, said Sarah Campbell, Orange Park town manager. A map shows drainage in that area has improved.
Sea level rise continues to pose threat to low-lying communities
Northeast Florida is no stranger to hurricanes and strong storms, and Tony Pooley, the sustainability and resiliency development manager for Terracon, said that with sea levels rising, the flooding after these storms will continue to get worse. โWe can see through tidal gauge data in Mayport that weโve had about 10 inches of increased sea level rise since 1930. Jacksonville is ruled by shorelines, which increases the threat of flooding with sea level rise, especially when a large storm moves through. The meeting focused on setting the scene of climate change and sea levels rising in and around Jacksonville. The issues that were mentioned involved rising sea levels, which can trigger a whole new list of problems such as water pollution caused by septic tanks during floods.
