Nassau woman who coughed in face of cancer patient pleads guilty, could face jail time
Debra Jo Hunter of Fernandina Beach was booked into the Duval County jail last year and charged with misdemeanor assault, according to jail records. Hunter agreed to plead guilty on two previous hearings, but the judge rejected them because it didnโt involve jail time. Witnesses identified Hunter as a woman seen in a viral video berating store staff and coughing on another woman who filmed the incident. While watching Hunter, Sprague took out her phone and began recording. โHowโs that?โHunter can then be seen coughing on Sprague before walking out of the store with her children in tow.
Child shot in arm while in car on Southside
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office responded to a local hospital Friday night where a child was being treated for a gunshot wound. Police learned the shooting happened as the boyโs mother was driving on Deer Lake Drive East, in a commercial area off between Southside Boulevard and the St. Johns Town Center. JSO said at least one shot was fired into the car, striking the boy in the arm. Violent Crimes Detectives responding to the scene found initial evidence suggesting the shooting was intentional. Woman at center of viral video charged in coughing incident at Jacksonville store
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A Nassau County woman faces a criminal charge after she was accused of deliberately coughing on and then threatening another shopper inside a Jacksonville store. Witnesses identified Hunter as a woman seen in a viral video berating store staff and coughing on another woman who filmed the incident. While watching the woman, Sprague took out her phone and began recording. โHowโs that?โThe woman can then be seen coughing on Sprague before walking out of the store with her children in tow. She filed a police report four days after the incident, saying she had not been feeling well since it happened.
Jacksonville mother could pursue charges against woman who coughed on her at Pier 1
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A Jacksonville mother of 10 could press misdemeanor battery charges against the woman who was seen coughing on her last week while she was inside a store at the St. Johns Town Center. Heather Sprague filed a police incident report Monday with the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office, four days after the confrontation that was seen in a now-viral video. According to the incident report, Sprague told JSO she was inside Pier 1 shortly before 2 p.m. June 25 when she noticed a woman berating staff members in the store over an item she wanted to return but didnโt have in her possession. Sprague also saw two young children wandering around the store, whom she said accompanied the woman. While watching from a distance, Sprague took out her phone and began recording video.
Windows boarded at some St. Johns Town Center stores
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. If you drove around the St. Johns Town Center on Tuesday, you might have noticed some stores that had their windows boarded. It wasnt immediately clear why the stores had boarded up, but on Saturday night, a heavy police presence was posted near the Town Center following a protest that turned violent in Downtown Jacksonville. Confirming much of what News4Jax was able to determine from JSO arrest records on Monday, Williams said there were 25 arrests on Saturday -- 23 of them Jacksonville residents -- and another 53 on Sunday -- 39 of them Duval County residents. Stores that had boarded their windows on Tuesday at the Town Center included Apple, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany and Company (see gallery above). Demonstrators across Jacksonville came together on Tuesday evening for peaceful protests around the Downtown Jacksonville area and in the Nocatee neighborhood in St. Johns County.
Jacksonville police monitoring hot spots across town after riots
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A heavy police presence was posted near the St. Johns Town Center on Saturday night in anticipation that rioters who clashed with police downtown earlier in the day might travel there next. Although there was a visibly heightened level of police activity at the Town Center, News4Jax crews saw no sign of the hostile crowds that packed the streets across town hours earlier. The violence erupted about 6:30 p.m. as a group of roughly 200 people stuck around after a protest earlier Saturday afternoon, Williams said. He said rioters confronted police, flinging rocks and water bottles at officers and vandalizing police vehicles in their path. In response, police lobbed flash bangs, tear gas and other crowd control devices as part of an effort to scatter the rioters.
High schooler organizes pop-up drive-in theater at Town Center to raise money for childrenโs hospital
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Looking for a safe way to raise money to support healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Adarsh Aratikatla along with classmate Javier Neret came up with the idea of using a drive-in movie theater to help Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital. After months of planning, Aratikatla, an incoming senior at the Bolles School and co-founder of the Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital Club, is planning to host the first movie showing in an empty parking lot at The Markets at Town Center. โI think this will be a fun event where people can bring their families and also you can watch a movie. None of the movie theaters are open right now so itโll be a fun experience.โThe group plans to show โBack to the Futureโ to about 60 people who donated nearly $800 to Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital. The group plans to show classic movies like โGooniesโ and โFerris Bullerโs Day Off.โThe group is not selling tickets for the events, but they are asking for free-will donations.
Small businesses staying open as long as they can
But with small businesses, things are happening on a case-by-case basis. Though owner Bryanetta Humphrey is concerned about the virus, she feels like she doesnโt have a choice but to stay open. โWe have to stay open until they say no more,โ Humphrey told News4Jax. But since small businesses donโt have that luxury, theyโre getting crafty. Ron DeSantis said he plans to turn on the Small Business Administration loan program, which would open up $50 million in bridge loans to help small businesses.

Have you noticed all the restaurants that have gone out of business in the St. Johns Town Center area? The restaurant closed itโs doors Jan. 24 after almost eight years in business. Town Center original Applebeeโs abruptly stopped serving customers in September. Mimiโs Cafรฉ, another of the original Town Center eateries, closed in the Spring of 2019. Another Town Center original Blackfinn closed in October 2018.
Black Friday shopping picks up after slow start at St. Johns Town Center
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Black Friday is easily the biggest shopping day of the year, but you might not have guessed that if you woke up early to take advantage of so-called door-buster deals at the St. Johns Town Center. The outdoor shopping mall on Jacksonvilleโs Southside typically is the busiest destination for shoppers, no matter what time of year. On Black Friday alone, the industry trade group anticipated 114.6 million people would be shopping nationwide. For people who canโt resist heading to the store, thereโs an amenity at the Town Center you might not know about. โYou can just call the shuttle and theyโll come pick you up, or hail them like a cab,โ said Ashlee Schneider, marketing and business development director for St. Johns Town Center parent company Simon Property group.
St. Johns Town Center hosting annual holiday spectacular
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - It might only be November, but it's beginning to look at lot like Christmas at the St. Johns Town Center. On Saturday, the outdoor shopping center is holding its 14th annual Holiday Spectacular. The all-day event features holiday-themed activities from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.Activities include a silent DJ, holiday photo booth, games, giveaways, an interactive hot chocolate station and an ornament decorating station. The Kid's Zone features letters to Santa, jugglers, caricature artists and costumed characters. At 8 p.m., the crowd can expect a visit from Santa Claus, who is scheduled to arrive and light the tree.
Applebee's closes doors near St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILE, Fla. - Another Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar has closed its doors in Jacksonville. It's unclear exactly when the restaurant closed up, but the signage has been removed from the building on Town Center Parkway. As reported by the Florida Times Union, the Applebee's first opened in 2007 when the Town Center was relatively new. Applebee's Bartram (14560 Old St. Augustine Rd.) Applebee's Lane Ave (843 Lane Avenue S.)As a product of the 90s, it always catches my attention when a restaurant that was popular during the decade closes up.

Tory Burch store at St. Johns Town Center robbed with pepper spray
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Employees of the Tory Burch store at the St. Johns Town Center were pepper-sprayed during a robbery Tuesday morning, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report. Police said two store employees approached them and one employee tried to get a purse away from the woman. Thats when, according to police, the woman yelled, Spray them. Spray them, and the man then pepper-sprayed the employees. The report stated the duo then fled with purses and other items, jumped into a car and sped off, hitting a parked car in the process.
Hot Places to Stay Cool: 'Morning Show' anchors get back to nature
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Morning Show team has been looking local for hot places to stay cool this week. But our peaceful three-hour tour had us paddling our kayaks between San Jose and Mandarin along the preservation area of Goodbys Creek. Our journey started at Goodbys Creek boat ramp, which is free to launch from by the way. Wicked Barley can be accessed from Goodbys Creek by boat or from Baymeadows Road near San Jose Boulevard by wheel. That's great, since Wicked Barley has an extensive menu for the hangriest of kids to the pickiest of eaters.
Jacksonville's 1st Sprouts Farmers Market opens
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The first Sprouts Farmers Market in Jacksonville opened Wednesday. The grocery store offering organic foods is at the old Best Buy location on Town Center Parkway in the Markets at Town Center, near the St. Johns Town Center. "We're a full-service grocery store, but we really advocate for healthy living for less. Attorneys: About 2 dozen sick after food poisoning at popular restaurant
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Two dozen people are sick after they said they got food poisoning at a popular Jacksonville restaurant. Many told the News4Jax I-TEAM that they have now been diagnosed with a parasite that can last for weeks. (I had) weakness, diarrhea and just a terrible stomach upset, he told the I-TEAM, adding that he lost 12 pounds. We found out that its all because of a parasite, said Lee, a lawyer who specializes in food poisoning cases. The ill are now on antibiotics to get rid of the parasite, but theyre concerned more people are sick and dont know whats wrong.
