Disney World said in a letter to state and local leaders Thursday that the 11,350 union workers — mostly part-timers — will be laid off at the end of the year. Company officials previously had said that another 6,400 nonunion Disney employees in Florida would lose their jobs. Disney’s parks closed last spring as the coronavirus began spreading in the U.S. The Florida parks reopened this summer with restrictions on how many people could be in the parks at any given time and new requirements for social distancing and mask-wearing. As of Friday, almost 4,200 Disney World workers had agreed to the job transfers, and almost 1,000 workers had decided to accept a layoff or they hadn't yet agreed to be transferred, said Eric Clinton, president of Unite Here!

VIERA, Fla. – The president of a Fraternal Order of Police chapter along Florida’s Space Coast has resigned after being told he would be fired following an internal investigation over a social media post that encouraged officers linked to departments accused of using excessive force during recent protests to apply for jobs in Florida. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Friday that Lt. Bert Gamin was no longer with the agency. The message posted last weekend on the Brevard FOP Facebook page said, “Hey Buffalo 57 ... and Atlanta 6 ... we are hiring in Florida. Before the launch was called off about 4:15 p.m., the excitement was palpable for members of one family. The father is an aerospace engineer from Gainesville, and so is the mother, who made NASA facemasks for the family. But the excitement among the thousands of people who gathered to watch the spacecraft blast off shifted to disappointment about 4:15 p.m. when the launch was postponed until Saturday afternoon and crowds quickly scattered. You never know,” said Tonya Farthing, who traveled to view the launch. “I know better now -- kind of like a preview of where to park and set up and get a better view.”The next launch attempt is set for 3:22 p.m. Saturday, and after that, the next launch window would be Sunday.
