TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rejected a request Wednesday to cancel the upcoming mini-lobster season over concerns about crowds spreading COVID-19. However, commissioners expressed concern that numerous public boat ramps will be closed in the upper Keys. Whats a little bit alarming, although we have not canceled mini season, is the fact that in Islamorada and everything north, including Monroe County, public marinas for boat ramps are being closed, Commissioner Rodney Barreto said. Spottswood said he intends to address the boat ramp issue with Monroe County officials. Thats just going to push folks to other ramps and create further congestion, Spottswood said.

Fla. officials clarify call for deaths of invasive green iguanas

CNN(CNN) - Florida wildlife officials are toning down their language after releasing a statement earlier this month that encouraged homeowners to kill green iguanas "whenever possible." Florida Fish and Wildlife suggests people contact professionals such as a local animal control office or a professional nuisance wildlife trapper if they are not capable of safely removing iguanas from their property. Florida's subtropical climate and lack of natural predators for the iguanas has allowed them to spread throughout the state. Green iguanas can damage infrastructure and harm native, endangered species in the state, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife's website. To deter green iguanas, the commission suggests homeowners fill in holes to discourage burrowing, hang wind chimes or CDs with reflective surfaces or spray the animals with water.

WPTV via CNNFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Florida wildlife officials are clarifying instructions to the public about killing non-native iguanas. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission statement released Thursday says members of the public who are not capable of safely and humanely removing iguanas from their property should seek assistance from professionals. An FWC news release earlier this month said people should exterminate the large green lizards on their properties, as well as on 22 public lands areas across South Florida. PREVIOUS STORY: Florida residents urged to kill invasive iguanasIn Thursday's statement, Commissioner Rodney Barreto says it was unfortunately conveyed that they were asking the public to shoot iguanas. Iguanas aren't dangerous but can dig lengthy tunnels and damage seawalls, sidewalks and landscape foliage.
