Two bills moving through the Florida Legislature aim to block development in nine state parks, including Anastasia State Park, but environmental advocates are concerned the bills lack specific protections. Protests are being held throughout April, urging lawmakers to amend the bills to ensure stronger safeguards against commercial development.

The Supreme Court on Friday stripped away the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion that had stood for nearly a half-century. The decision by the court’s conservative majority overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

Hundreds of people are expected to rally Saturday outside the Duval County Courthouse for abortion rights. This comes after a draft opinion was leaked earlier this month, suggesting that the U.S. Supreme Court could be poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide. Since then, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has received reports of unruly anti-abortion protesters outside A Woman’s Choice of Jacksonville clinic.

Protests have erupted all over the country after Politico released a leaked initial draft majority opinion indicating the U.S. Supreme Court would overturn two abortion-related cases, which would end federal protection of abortion rights.

Some people in Duval County want the name of Robert E. Lee High School to change, calling it oppressive because the school is named after a confederate general in the Civil War. Others say the name is about of history and should not change.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida House on Thursday began debating legislation that aims to crack down on violent protests. Democrats proposed adding five amendments to House Bill 1 in an effort to water down the bill, which critics say will impose on people’s rights to peacefully protest. The legislation was written in response to the burning of buildings in the Tampa Bay area in June and windows smashed in Tallahassee, among violent unrest elsewhere in the state. It protects police officers who are there protecting against violent protests,” House Speaker Chris Sprowls said of the bill. Opponents claim the legislation will stifle peaceful protests, a criticism Sprowls took issue with.

BALTIMORE – Baltimore protesters pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw it into the city's Inner Harbor on Saturday night. Protesters mobilized by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police have called for the removal of statues of Columbus, Confederate figures and others. They say the Italian explorer is responsible for the genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas. According to The Baltimore Sun, the statue was owned by the city and dedicated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and President Ronald Reagan. Statues of Columbus have also been toppled or vandalized in cities such as Miami; Richmond, Virginia; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Boston, where one was decapitated.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. Standing in strength. Hundreds of people in St. Augustine marched to the Plaza de la Constitucion on Sunday for a protest. It started as a silent march that began in front of St. Paul AME Church on Martin Luther King Avenue. Once they gathered there, things got a bit more vocal specifically about the Confederate monument in the Plaza. Some protesters say they hope the same thing happens in St. Augustine.

Zecher is a convicted felon, prohibited from carrying a weapon, because of a Clay County incident when he was 21-years-old. He pleaded guilty to the incident in Clay County where he threatened his combative sister with a knife, ultimately stabbing a wall. I think hes a kid who got caught up in stuff that hes bigger than he is. Zechers fiances grandmother said she would house him and watch over him at her Clay County home if he was released on bond.

The documentary tells the story of the days of protests, unrest and riots that followed. It’s a great film that shows how two different groups of people can react to fatal police shootings.

Color of Change is the largest online racial injustice organization. It’s a great place to donate to help fight racial injustices. If there is any organization that has been fighting for social justice and change for years and years, it’s the ACLU. Not only does it fight for racial justice, it fights for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights and so much more. This is pretty simple: The petition is asking for justice for George Floyd’s death.

State Attorney Jack Campbell said the incident is still under investigation as authorities comb through dozens of video clips for evidence. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The city of Jacksonville has canceled its appointments Sunday with those seeking help with mortgages and rent after rioting erupted downtown Saturday. Appointments for the mortgage, rent and utility relief program were scheduled for Sunday at the Jacksonville Library and Ed Ball building. The sheriff said an officer was stabbed and others were hurt by projectiles. The city spokesperson said residents with appointments whose last names begin with the letters A through M will be moved to next Saturday, June 6, at the Ed Ball building on Hogan Street. Appointments for those whose last names begin with N through Z will have make-up dates on Sunday, June 7, at the Ed Ball building.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two civil rights organizations joined together for a motorcade protest in downtown Jacksonville Tuesday morning. The controversy that they are voicing outrage over revolves around the actions of Florida Circuit Court Judge Tyrie Boyer and Jacksonville attorney Michael Kalil on April 24, which are under investigation by the Florida Bar. Now, both the Jacksonville NAACP and the Northside Coalition are calling for an investigation because they said it was unfair for Kalil to win the seat in that manner. “We are concerned that Jacksonville attorney Michael Kalil violated the qualification process so he could win an election as a circuit court judge by default and without an election," President of Jacksonville NAACP Isaiah Rumlin said. He has not announced any intention to withdraw from the race since calls for him to do so began in April.
