Jenkins Quality Barbeque said on Friday that all of its online sauce orders are being paused due to high demand.

Lines down the street, parking lots full, and extended wait times for those ribs smothered in the special mustard-based sauce were the scene on Wednesday at the downtown Jenkins Quality Barbecue location.

For generations, the smell of smoked chicken and ribs has drawn people into Jenkins Quality Barbecue. But after nearly seven decades, the Jenkins family said they’re turning off the smokers for good.

After 68 years of serving the Jacksonville community, Jenkins Quality Barbecue announced Tuesday that it will close all three of its locations by the end of the month.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When it comes to Black business legacy, Jenkins Quality Barbecue may be one of the oldest Black family-owned restaurants in Jacksonville. “When then other kids went out to play or the movies on Saturdays, I came to Jenkins Barbecue to work,” Meltonia Jenkins recalled. “Back then, Jenkins Quality Barbecue was segregated. Jenkins Quality Barbecue (WJXT)After segregation ended, the business grew. “We basically have takeout and drive-through, so when COVID-19 struck, we didn’t have to worry about sit-in,” Meltonia Jenkins said.
