In a season of misery, I can say that that performance against Baltimore was the worst of them all. I think we all just witnessed the worst loss in a season filled with losses. If you look solely at his numbers (22 of 29 passing, 226 yards, two touchdowns), they look good. While the Jaguars weren’t winning games, they were at least competitive mostly deep into the second half. Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins runs with the ball against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, in Baltimore. Instead, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens enjoyed a feel-good, confidence-building blowout that boosted their chances of reaching the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Jackson threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, and Baltimore built a 26-point halftime lead against helpless Jacksonville in a 40-14 victory Sunday. The Ravens (9-5) have won three straight following a three-game skid and remained in the hunt to secure one of three AFC wild-card spots. The highlight of the fourth quarter was a 22-yard first-down run by Baltimore offensive lineman Tyre Phillips with a Jackson fumble.

The Ravens would love to savor the memory of Lamar Jackson coming off the bench to throw a pivotal fourth-down touchdown pass before setting up Justin Tucker for a 55-yard winning field goal. So if the Ravens experience a letdown Sunday against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars (1-12), then Jackson's heroics in that epic 47-42 win over the Browns could turn out to be meaningless. “These are professional players, and they understand that to make the last win matter, you have to win the next one," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “I don’t know if it’s hitting their stride or just really executing on a real high level, both in the run game and in the pass game," coach Doug Marrone said of Baltimore. Rookie Jake Luton started three games while Minshew was out with a thumb injury and Mike Glennon started the following three games.

I know Doug Marrone didn’t announce his decision after the game, but I can’t imagine going back to Glennon at this point. In all likelihood, it’s going to be Minshew starting these next three games and the teams seeing what he can do. You’re not going to see any of those players, Glennon, Jake Luton or Minshew, here long term. The Jaguars have three games left to change that direction, where it’s not the worst season we’ve ever had.

The Jaguars are now 1-12 on the season and are one loss away from matching the longest losing skid in franchise history, and three losses away from the worst season in Jaguars history. The Jaguars had no answer for Derrick Henry, againThe Jaguars entered the game ranked 30th out of 32 teams in the NFL in run defense. Henry averaged 88.7 rushing yards per game against the Jaguars in his career before Sunday. With three games to go, Robinson ranks 13th in Jaguars’ history with 1,035 rushing yards. He needs 289 yards in the final three games to finish in the top five in single-season rushing yards in Jaguars’ history.

So Vrabel stuck with Henry, who delivered a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter that helped him make NFL history. Henry ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns, his best performance in five trips to his hometown area, and the Titans dominated Jacksonville 31-10 on Sunday and handed the Jaguars a 12th consecutive loss. Enjoying a big performance about 25 miles from his hometown of Yulee was something new for Henry. Henry had 170 yards on 17 carries in the first 30 minutes, including a 36-yard touchdown run. He added a 47-yard scamper early in the third as the AFC South-leading Titans (9-4) started to pull away.

The Titans and a very familiar running back came to town and pulverized the Jaguars 31-10 on Sunday in a one-sided romp that saw Jacksonville change quarterbacks again. But no magic from Gardner Minshew could bail the Jaguars out of a season-worst 28-point hole that Yulee High graduate Derrick Henry and the Titans put them in as the march towards an all-time worst season continues. Full Screen 1 / 20 Laviska Shenault Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars runs the ball past Rashaan Evans of the Tennessee Titans at TIAA Bank Field on December 13, 2020 in Jacksonville, Florida. Henry was dominant in steamrolling a team that he grew up watching, cracking the 200-yard mark and pacing the Titans (9-4) much of the game. Henry ripped off a 36-yard touchdown run with 52 seconds before the break and the Jaguars proceeded to go three and out in just 35 seconds.

Mark Brunell: Jaguars need to give Gardner Minshew another shot

Why not think about going back to Gardner Minshew and see if he can get things moving. We’ve seen Luton. We haven’t seen Minshew since the Chargers game and he was playing with breaks in his thumb. I thought Glennon played well in last week’s 27-25 loss to the Browns. If Marrone rolls the dice once more with Glennon, and unless he shows significant improvement, the Jaguars need to go back to Minshew.

The Jaguars, 9-30 since October 2018, initiated an aggressive teardown before last season and fired general manager Dave Caldwell last week. Even teams with no wins or few wins, it’s still a bunch of pro athletes with a bunch of pride, and they’re going to show up and they’re going to play hard and they’re going to be coached well. Losing to Minnesota would serve to lower the second-round selection the Jaguars obtained for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue in late August. Ngakoue still leads the Vikings with five sacks despite being traded to Baltimore after six games. GLENNON AGAINThe Jaguars are sticking with quarterback Mike Glennon despite Gardner Minshew now being fully healthy from his thumb injury.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars are sticking with Mike Glennon at quarterback, at least for this week. Coach Doug Marrone said on Wednesday that the coaching staff feels that the veteran gives the team the best shot to win right now. Week 1 starter Gardner Minshew is able to play, Marrone said, but Glennon is the guy for now. I thought he played well [last week],” Marrone said. Minshew hasn’t played since a 39-29 loss to the Chargers in Week 7.

Coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday he’s sticking with Glennon at Minnesota (5-6) on Sunday. It probably helped that Glennon was solid in his first start since Week 4 of the 2017 season. Glennon didn’t have a turnover — the first time since the season opener Jacksonville played a clean game — and wasn’t sacked. “There’s no doubt that we are going to try to win every single game that we play,” Marrone said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In what could be his final two months on the job, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone is making changes. They’re halfway home to another top-five draft pick and probably another significant reboot. Then again, since the Jaguars face the toughest schedule of anyone in the second half of the season, it might not matter. They play three divisions leaders (Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Tennessee), three second-place teams (Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis), plus Cleveland (5-3) and Minnesota (3-5). WHAT’S WORKINGRunning back James Robinson has four touchdowns in three games, further establishing himself as the team’s most consistent player.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s still a loss, but the Jaguars didn’t play like a team that’s going in the tank on Sunday against the Texans. But I want to focus on the quarterback spot and the play from rookie quarterback Jake Luton, a sixth-round pick from Oregon State. Luton got DJ Chark back into the mix and Chark had been off the radar for weeks and out of sync with Minshew. I think that Luton, with what he showed against the Texans, certainly has earned another week of starting. I think the Jaguars should give him another chance and see what he can do.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars have been here before. The Jaguars (1-6) are last in the AFC South, the same spot they occupied in each of the last two seasons and three times in the last four years. The Texans haven’t brought up the rear in the South since 2013. One of them will double their win total and escape the AFC South cellar when they meet Sunday. “Man, they just need to forfeit the game,” Jaguars defensive end Josh Allen quipped.

Although the Texans, like the Jaguars, are struggling with a 1-6 record, the obstacles to success for Luton are many. I had my girlfriend calling plays to me, but they don’t exactly know how to spit it out the right way, the right verbiage. That may be an accurate scouting report, but Luton has yet to face an NFL defense or a live rush. On a Jaguars offense that has been struggling to score points (perhaps, somewhat due to Minshew playing with an injury on his throwing hand), can the Jaguars devise some ways to let Luton play free and easy? “I dreamed of playing in NFL and getting that opportunity to step out here will definitely be a dream come true.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A rookie sixth-round quarterback preparing to make his first NFL start for the Jaguars because of an injury — sound familiar? Jaguars coach Doug Marrone has a bit of experience with this. So, when Jake Luton makes the start for the Jaguars (1-6) on Sunday against the Texans (1-6) at TIAA Bank Field, it’s something that both Marrone and Jaguars fans know all too well about. On Sunday, Marrone and the Jaguars will get another look at a sixth-round rookie quarterback in Luton, who will start in place of Minshew. Because it’s a unique position, especially now this year without the preseason games where you can kind of see him in the preseason games, where things are going fast and you’ve got have a lot of bodies flying around you,” Marrone said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With Gardner Minshew dealing with a thumb injury, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said Monday that he will go with rookie Jake Luton as the team’s starting quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans. Luton, like Minshew, was a 6th round pick of the Jaguars. Unlike Minshew, Luton did not have the benefit of preseason games to get his feet underneath him in the preseason. When asked if there was anything that he could see in practice that would cause Marrone to not start Luton, Marrone said, “I’ve watched him enough (in practice). Luton will become the fifth quarterback to start a game for the Jaguars since Doug Marrone took over.

The Jaguars drafted 12 players this year. If so, the Jaguars will have to allocate a sizable chunk to Robinson, who plays the premium position of left tackle. Andrew Norwell goes from being a $12 million cap hit to a $15 million cap hit, but his dead money drops from $18 million to $6 million, so the Jaguars have more flexibility to move on from him if needed. And, it would be a shock if the Jaguars would move on from Jawaan Taylor at right tackle. We saw the Jaguars in 2018 start to fray at the seams later in the season.

The injury could prompt Marrone to turn to rookie Jake Luton after the team’s bye week. In fact, the Jaguars didn’t achieve a first down until there was less than 11 minutes left in the second quarter. That being said, when the Jaguars needed Minshew to make plays in the fourth quarter, he did not. Not only is he a guy the Jaguars can build around for the future, he is the present of the Jaguars offense. That was a big play, but the true turnaround actually took place in the second quarter when the Jaguars offense and defense started to show up.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Doug Marrone doesn’t see big changes making a big difference for the struggling Jaguars. If there were a change to make, Marrone said that he’d gladly be willing to make it. But the issues plaguing the Jaguars have been so widespread week to week that there’s not one simple fix to get things turned back around. A day after the Jaguars' fifth straight loss, Marrone said that there aren’t clear-cut personnel changes that would help. Marrone said that the team is trying to put players in the best position possible but knows that the losing skid opens him up to skepticism.
