JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The path to the state semifinals in Lakeland continues for boys high school basketball teams this week. Eleven area teams are in action in the second round of the state playoffs on Tuesday night, including four all-local clashes. Region 1-7ABartram Trail (14-13) at Seminole (15-7): Not even a hint of difficulty for the Bears in their playoff opener, a 55-25 blowout of Lake Mary. The Bears have never been past the second round of the state playoffs, losing in their only two trips (2003, 2018). The Warriors hadn’t won a playoff game since 2013 until last week’s 57-44 victory over Bishop Kenny.

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. – An off-campus party contributed to an outbreak of more than two dozen COVID-19 cases at Fletcher High School, Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene said Thursday afternoon. “I’m not satisfied in that we are in a position that we had to close our school because of activity outside of the school,” Greene said. On Thursday, students at Fletcher High began learning at home through at least Monday. “Not only was just the schools but with everything.”Rolle praised DCPS for taking swift action at Fletcher High. At Fletcher High, that would mean roughly 320 students and staff were found to be exposed to COVID-19.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fletcher’s football game against Gainesville Buchholz is off for Friday night after the school noticed an uptick in COVID-19 activity within the community. “In addition to classes going online, effective immediately, there will be no athletics or after school activities, including tonight’s JV football game as well as Friday night’s varsity football game,” Ledford wrote. COVID-19 football cancellations or adjustments have picked up substantially in recent weeks. Clay High was the first area school to cancel a game due to COVID-19 in Week 4. There have been multiple teams who have had to scramble to find replacement opponents due to COVID concerns.
