Hurricane Erin is starting to churn up big waves along the northeast coast after pelting North Carolina’s Outer Banks with strong winds and swells that flooded a few places on the barrier islands.

Weather forecasters are predicting wild temperature swings across the eastern U.S. Wednesday was expected to be another scorcher before temperatures plunge as much as 30 degrees.

Harsh has cold descended on the nation’s midsection as a polar vortex grips the Rockies and northern Plains.

Road conditions are beginning to deteriorate in the central U.S. as a mixture of snow, ice and plunging temperatures arrived.

The National Weather Service says that around 134 million people in the U.S. are under alerts as an extremely dangerous and record-breaking heat wave broils much of the country.

Much of saturated California remains under threat of floods as the latest winter storm blows through, but so far the state has escaped the severity of damage spawned by a recent atmospheric river.

Nearly 3.4 million customers around the U.S. were still without electricity, and some also lost water service. More than 100 million people live in areas covered by some type of winter weather warning, watch or advisory, the weather service said. Weather-related outages have been particularly stubborn in Oregon, where some customers have been without power for almost a week. At the peak of the storm, more than 350,000 customers in the Portland area were in the dark. In Oregon, authorities confirmed Tuesday that four people died in the Portland area of carbon monoxide poisoning.
