It’s EARTH DAY! Earth Day is a great time to celebrate and appreciate the beauty and fragility of our amazing planet. In our community, this could mean taking hike on a local trail, going for a swim at the beach or picking up trash in a local park. For Beaches Go Green volunteers it’s all about EDUCATION!

Beaches Go Green is a volunteer based organization looking to make the Earth more sustainable.  Students from all over Jacksonville volunteer their time for various cleanup activities.

The Beaches Oktoberfest is also hosting a beach clean-up on Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Beaches Go Green joined the show today to talk about how to pack an eco-friendly beach bag and why it is so important to protect our beaches. Here are some tips and tricks to know before your next beach trip:

More than 450 volunteers took part in the Beaches Go Green event in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday morning.

Organizers are building a new waste sculpture for the event to raise awareness about the impact of single-use plastic on the environment.

To celebrate the upcoming Beaches Go Green - Positively Jax Community Clean-Up, Eden Kendall visited with the Nease High School Beaches Go Green Club. The officers of the club were very excited because they were about to receive hundreds of water bottles that the club had sponsored to be included as part of the school sports teams’ uniforms.

The bins are equipped with technology to alert employees when they are almost full.

In St. Johns County, there were 300 volunteers, and 1,350 cigarette butts and 25 bags of trash were collected. And another interesting find among the hundreds of pounds of litter, plastic and cigarette butts.... a set of false teeth! JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – It graced Jacksonville Beach’s Seawalk Pavilion since November, but now the famous octopus made of single-use plastic will be moving to its new home at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, where it’ll continue to spread awareness about the environment. Piece by piece and strand by strand, volunteers from Beaches Go Green broke down the area’s most visible artificial sea creature on Sunday. “But the breakdown and the setup are always a big undertaking.”The gigantic cephalopod is not only made up of tens of thousands of single-use plastic bottles, but it’s also responsible for more than 1,000 volunteer hours. Now, it’ll soon be on its way to the Jacksonville zoo. Once the octopus is taken to the Jacksonville zoo, it’ll be stored a period of time before a master plan on how it’ll be displayed is created.
