JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jessica Dimalanta, 19, was shot through her right eye this month in San Francisco. Jacksonville artist Elena Øhlander is speaking out against the hate through her art to help Dimalanta and other Asians dealing with violence. “Unfortunately, the level of harassment and violence against Asian Americans has been escalating,” said Øhlander, who is of Chinese and Norwegian descent. Recently, the United States was awakened by a disturbing attack in which eight people, including six Asian Americans, were killed at Atlanta-area day spas. Elena Øhlander (Toni Smailagic (Cre8Jax))According to stopaapihate.org, the group has received 3,795 reports of hate against Asian Americans from March 2020 to February 2021.

Churchill gave the painting to Roosevelt as a memento of the trip. The painting was sold by the Jolie Family Collection.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A group of local artists unveiled a mural Saturday in Avondale. Six artists, part of a nonprofit organization called Figment, spent the last month putting the mural together. "It's all about courage, uncertainty, how we get through those times of uncertainty, perseverance and change," Corey Kreisel said. He talked about how this plays a role in reaching out into communities and having conversations to make change. This was also an effort to gather up donations for a Jacksonville group fighting injustices.
