JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As antisemitic incidents have risen nationally over the past 18 months, the Jewish community in Northeast Florida is finding strength and solidarity through the celebration of Purim, a vibrant holiday that commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from the villainous Haman.
It serves as a reminder of resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

Rabbi Shmuli Novack, co-founder of the Chabad Town Center and UNF, explained the significance of Purim: “Purim is a holiday that celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people in the face of Haman, a bad guy who wanted to kill, annihilate, and get rid of all of the Jewish people. Unfortunately, this is a recurring theme we see throughout history.”
Despite the challenges posed by rising antisemitism, the Jewish community is using Purim as an opportunity to come together and celebrate their heritage. Novack emphasized, “Instead of becoming intimidated or in any way negatively impacted by these incidents, it actually galvanizes the Jewish community to come together.”
The celebrations, organized by Chabad Jewish centers across Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns, Flagler, and Putnam counties, aim to foster joy and unity.
“It’s the most joyous day on the Jewish year. And instead of becoming depressed or down about what we’re seeing, it’s actually inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging,” Novack said.
Chana Novack, Rabbi Novack’s wife, shared her perspective on the holiday’s message. “For us, it’s actually the message of the story that God is everywhere in our day-to-day life, even if we don’t see these huge miracles happening,” she said. This sentiment is reflected in the Purim tradition of wearing costumes and enjoying hamantaschen, a pastry with a hidden filling, symbolizing the hidden miracles in everyday life.
The Novacks also highlighted the importance of support from non-Jewish neighbors. Shmuli Novack expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by the broader community, saying, “It’s so inspiring and uplifting when our non-Jewish friends and neighbors come over and say, ‘I heard of a story going on right now in Columbia University. So I just want you to know that we support the Jewish community.’”
As Purim celebrations unfold, the Jewish community in Jacksonville continues to stand strong, finding joy and unity amid adversity. This year’s festivities are a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the Jewish people, reminding everyone of the power of community and the importance of standing together in the face of hate.
