Varsity 4 News4JAX Super 10 rankings

Rank, (previous), school, record last year, classification

1. (2) Raines (3-0, Class 3A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 1 (2).

Last week: Beat Lake Mary, 51-3. This week: Off.

Why they’re here: The Vikings blasted last year’s Class 7A state runner-up Lake Mary on the road to move up to the No. 1 spot. They’re off this week before returning on Sept. 26 at Riverside.

2. (1) St. Augustine (4-0, Class 4A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 2 (1).

Last week: Beat Riverside, 47-41. This week: at (3) Nease (4-0).

Why they’re here: The Yellow Jackets slip a spot after a disappointing defensive effort against Riverside. They’re going to need to tighten up on that side of the ball against a tough Nease team this week.

3. (4) Oakleaf (4-0, Class 6A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 4 (6).

Last week: Beat Hawthorne, 35-26. This week: vs. (4) Bolles (3-1).

Why they’re here: The Knights lost to Hawthorne last year and topped them last week, notching their highest quality W of the season. Their defense has been really strong this year. Can they slow down a powerful running attack of Bolles this week?

4. (3) Bolles (3-1, Class 2A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 5 (3).

Last week: Beat Bishop Kenny, 36-0. This week: at (4) Oakleaf (4-0).

Why they’re here: I slid Bolles down a spot, through no fault of their own. The Bulldogs walloped Bishop Kenny to set up this week’s heavyweight matchup at No. 3 Oakleaf. Xander Edwards has been the area’s top running back this season.

5. (5) Nease (4-0, Class 6A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 3 (5).

Last week: Beat Fletcher, 22-6. This week: vs. (2) St. Augustine (4-0).

Why they’re here: The Panthers have stacked some quality wins this season, including a tough, defensive effort last week at Fletcher. History hasn’t been kind to them against St. Augustine (7-34) but they had a huge win over the Yellow Jackets in OT last year.

6. (6) Mandarin (4-0, Class 6A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 6 (4).

Last week: Beat Bradford, 14-7.This week: vs. IMG Academy (2-0), 6:30 p.m.

Why they’re here: The Mustangs overcame a tough defense last week to stay perfect. The Ascenders are on a different level, but credit to the Mustangs for this two-year series deal with IMG. Brutal assignment.

7. (8) Columbia (4-0, Class 4A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 7 (7).

Last week: Beat Madison County, 9-0.This week: vs. Trinity Christian (1-3), 7:30 p.m.

Why they’re here: Winning at Boot Hill is always a challenge, but the Tigers are sizzling. Trinity has won five straight games in this series, including 21-14 last year.

8. (9) White (3-0, Class 4A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 9 (9).

Last week: Beat Englewood, 74-0. This week: vs. Parker (0-3), 6:30 p.m.

Why they’re here: The Commanders are on a blistering pace, outscoring teams by a combined 184-38. They should roll into a Week 9 game against Oakleaf unbeaten.

9. (7) Bradford (3-1, Class 2A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 9 (8).

Why they’re here: The Tornadoes have a defense that can corral any team, but they’ve got to pick up the pace on offense. Points haven’t been easy to find the last two weeks.

10. (NR) Beachside (3-1, Class 5A)

Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 10 (NR).

Last week: Beat Ponte Vedra, 33-20. This week: vs. Bishop Kenny (2-1), Thursday.

Why they’re here: The Barracudas handled Ponte Vedra last week to return to the Super 10. They’re back to normal with QB Eddie Jordan in the lineup. But a challenging Thursday night clash against Bishop Kenny awaits.
