Four to watch

(10) Fleming Island (2-0) at (4) Oakleaf (2-0)

A clash for more than just bragging rights in Clay County. Since both of these teams are barreling toward solid seasons, this one will mean a boost for the winner in the FHSAA rankings come playoff time. The Knights lead the all-time series 9-5 and have won three straight in relatively close games (average 6.7 points margin of victory). Oakleaf hasn’t had the smoothest offensive start but its defense has been humming along. Jordin Price has two picks, both in the Week 1 game, and took one back for a score. Price has two of Oakleaf’s six picks this year. Watch out for DL Chris Jules at the line of scrimmage. He’s a force. LBs Jermaine Robinson and Sean Smith have combined for 42 tackles for the Knights. Once QB Jack McKissock and Oakleaf get the offense in synch, this is going to be a dangerous Knights team. Fleming Island has done well to manage its graduation losses. Defensively, the Golden Eagles are stout. Sebastian Cruz and Jarius Rodgers are elite defenders for Fleming Island. DL Landon Howard had three tackles for loss last week against Riverside. Eric Gentry has stepped into the starting QB role and kept the Golden Eagles humming.

Raines (1-0) at Trinity Christian (0-2)

The Vikings opened their season with a 77-0 romp over Sandalwood last week. They’ve got a good chance to beat the Conquerors for the second time after losing four straight in the series. QB Timothy Cole had five touchdown passes in the first quarter in that game. RB Tadarius Washington averaged 20.9 yards a carry (7 carries, 146 yards, TD) in Week 2. WRs Ethan Sherman, Ziyon Butler and Kelvin Brown Jr. caught two TDs apiece. Raines won’t have that easy of a time against Trinity. The Conquerors gave Bolles some trouble for a half last week. It’s been the second half in both of their games that has been their undoing. QB Terrel Dallas has thrown a couple TD passes but he’s been more efficient on the ground. WR Chris Grissett has 189 receiving yards on 10 catches. For Trinity, this game centers on how uncomfortable it can make Cole. If the pass rush can’t get him out of rhythm, it’s going to be a long night. With enough time and the weapons he has to throw to, Trinity can’t allow the reigning offensive player of the year to get comfortable.

(3) St. Augustine (2-0) at (1) Bolles (2-0)

The Varsity 4 Game of the Week is a massive one between two of the area’s top three teams. These teams first met in 1950 and have met sporadically since then. Bolles has won five of the six meetings in the 2000s, but the Yellow Jackets won a 43-36 thriller in the last face off in 2023. The question in this one — can the Yellow Jackets score enough against a tough Bulldogs defense? St. Augustine has dropped numbers to start the season (41-0 over Palatka, 48-6 over Menendez) but those opponents aren’t on the level of a Bolles. QB Brenton James has completed nearly 75% of his passes and thrown seven TDs. WRs Somourian Wingo and Julio Santiago are elite pass catchers. Doing that against Bolles will no doubt more challenging. LB/S Simeon Caldwell and DL Asher Ghioto are very good. Also in the secondary are TJ Williamson and Santana Starks are very good. WR Naeem Burroughs, QB Jaden Weatherly and RB Xander Edwards all present their own set of problems for teams. St. Augustine head coach Brian Braddock and Bolles head coach Matt Toblin go way back to the early 2000s in St. Johns County. Toblin was an assistant at Nease under Craig Howard and Braddock was an assistant under Joey Wiles. Toblin is 4-1 in the series.

Tocoi Creek (2-0) at Bishop Kenny (1-0)

With how both of these teams have started, this could be a game of the night contender. The Crusaders have won all four games in this series, three of those convincingly. Only one game, a 23-20 BK win in 2023, has been within single digits. Kenny won a thriller in Week 2, blocking a PAT to deny University Christian a tie late in the fourth quarter. RB Caleb Mattison (below) is in the conversation as the area’s top back, and he was lights out against a tough UC defense last week. QB Lucas Whitworth hasn’t thrown much, but he’s connected with five TDs on just 14 completions. Talk about efficient. WR Zack Lloyd has hauled in three of those grabs. Defense has been sharp for the Toros. CB Javares Rickerson has both an interception return for a TD and a kickoff return for a TD. The Toros have outscored their two opponents 76-6.

Bishop Kenny hosted University Christian in Week 2 on Friday night and came away with a 21-20 win. (News4JAX)

Next four to watch

Charlton County (2-1) at Yulee (2-0): A Georgia-Florida clash that has the Indians with a 2-1 all-time series lead. QB Tre Vazquez has four TD passes and no picks for the Hornets. RB Jayden Timmon has been big for Yulee (327 rushing yards, 3 TDs). WR Brandon Woolard has four TD catches and a rushing TD for Charlton.

Lincoln (2-0) at (6) Nease (2-0): The Panthers have been on a tear to start the season. Brayden Felder, Vernon Stephens and Chase Phifer have been QB Aiden Phifer’s favorite targets. This is Nease’s biggest test so far this season.

University Christian (1-1) at Jackson (2-0), 6:30 p.m.: The Tigers are looking for their first 3-0 start since 2009 when Kevin Sullivan was in charge. The Tigers have a solid defense, but they haven’t faced a team like the Christians thus far.

Ware County (3-0) at Bartram Trail (0-2): The Bears have been in a funk on offense to start the season. Can they get RB Arthur Lewis IV and QB Coleson Baum moving this week against a powerful Gators team?
