Varsity 4 News4JAX Super 10 rankings
Rank, (previous), school, record last year, classification
1. (1) Bolles (2-0, Class 2A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 1 (1).
Last week: Beat Trinity Christian, 35-12. This week: vs. (3) St. Augustine, 2-0.
Why they’re here: Bolles pulled away from Trinity last week with a solid offense under Jaden Weatherly and a very good defensive showing. Bolles will get an ever bigger challenge this week against the Yellow Jackets.
2. (2) Raines (1-0, Class 3A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 2 (2).
Last week: Beat Sandalwood, 77-0. This week: at Trinity Christian (0-2).
Why they’re here: The Vikings were as advertised in their season opener against Sandalwood. A far more difficult assignment in Week 2. Timothy Cole had more TD passes (5) than he did incompletions (3) in the opener.
3. (3) St. Augustine (2-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 4 (5).
Last week: Beat Menendez, 48-6.This week: at (1) Bolles, (2-0).
Why they’re here: A pair of rivalry wins out of the gate but things get difficult in a hurry. The Yellow Jackets have trips to Riverside and Nease followed by a district clash against Columbia. The Yellow Jackets are 11-12 all-time against Bolles.
4. (4) Oakleaf (2-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 6 (3).
Last week: Beat Orange Park, 56-7. This week: vs. (10) Fleming Island (2-0).
Why they’re here: The Knights did what they were supposed to do last week in drumming OP. Can they keep their series streak going against the Golden Eagles? They’ve three straight and nine of 14 overall in the series.
5. (5) Mandarin (2-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 3 (4).
Last week: Beat Atlantic Coast, 54-16. This week: at Sandalwood (0-2), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Mustangs have dropped 50 or more in consecutive weeks to start the season. They’ve got big tests on deck in Weeks 4 (Bradford) and 5 (IMG Academy).
6. (7) Nease (2-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 5 (6).
Last week: Beat Creekside, 50-8. This week: vs. Tallahassee Lincoln (2-0).
Why they’re here: Another challenge for the Panthers, who have looked excellent to open the season. They’ve got a tough stretch after this, with Fletcher, St. Augustine, Buchholz and Bartram Trail on deck.
7. (6) Bradford (2-0, Class 2A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 8 (7).
Last week: Beat Dunnellon, 35-0. This week: at South Sumter (2-0), 7:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: A romp in the Blood Rivalry series and the familiar rock solid defense leading the way. The Tornadoes are another area team that has eyes on a deep playoff run once again.
8. (9) Columbia (2-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 7 (9).
Last week: Beat Coffee, Ga., 20-14.This week: at Hillsborough (0-2), 7:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Tigers muscled up last week to hold off Coffee, a team that won a state title in Georgia two seasons ago. That’s a huge win on a schedule that is very, very difficult.
9. (8) White (1-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 9 (8).
Last week: OFF. This week: vs. Westside (0-2), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Commanders drop a spot after an off week (and a big win by Columbia). There should be no problem in getting to 2-0 this week.
10. (NR) Fleming Island (2-0, Class 5A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): NR/NA.
Last week: beat Riverside, 42-33. This week: at (4) Oakleaf (2-0).
Why they’re here: Solid win over Riverside last week for the Golden Eagles. Tough assignment on Friday night with a visit to face No. 4 Oakleaf.
