JACKSONVILLE, – Edward Waters head football coach Toriano Morgan has stepped down from his position after four years leading the Tigers.
Morgan led EWU through its transition into NCAA Division II and had his two best seasons in 2022 and ’23, going a combined 11-10. The school has named Brian Jenkins as the interim head coach.

“We are confident in Coach Jenkins’ ability to lead our program with integrity, discipline, and vision,” Ashley Conner, deputy director of athletics, said in a statement. “He has earned the trust of our student-athletes and staff, and we’re excited about the leadership he brings into this transitional chapter for Edward Waters football.”
News4JAX was told at this week’s SIAC media days that Morgan was planning to step down for another position.
Morgan is a Florida native and has spent more than two decades coaching in the high school and college ranks. He leaves EWU with an 18-24 record. His 6-4 mark in 2023 was the best at the program since 2004.
EWU will open its season at Savannah State on Aug. 30. The Tigers’ home opener is on Sept. 6 against Miles College.
In elevating Jenkins to the head role on an interim basis, EWU will keep the same system in place. Jenkins has been the associate head coach and offensive coordinator alongside Morgan since 2021. He has head coaching experience, too. Jenkins served as Bethune-Cookman’s head coach from 2010-14 and won four MEAC championships and went to the FCS playoffs three times. Jenkins was 46-14 at BCU.
