St. Johns River State College advances at World Series (Simone Amaduzzi)

Oxford, Ala. – The St. Johns River State College softball team is one win closer to repeating as the NJCAA D2 softball champions. The Vikings beat Mercer County 9-2 in the first game of the World Series in Oxford, Alabama.

The Vikings wasted no time taking the lead. In the bottom of the second, Megan O’Keefe doubled to left field scoring two runs. Then Princess Arredondo RBI double gave SJRSC a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Mercer County scored two runs to cut their deficit, 4-2.

The sixth inning is when the Vikings put the game away. O’Keefe scored again to make it 5-2. Then Caylee Elder scored a wild pitch, 6-2. Alyssa Vallad scored the final two runs on a RBI double to right center, then running home on a fielding error.

St. Johns River State College will play Northwest Mississippi Community College Wednesday at 2 p.m.
