JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mandarin boys track and field team used a pair of individual championships to finish as Class 4A state runner-up as the state meet wrapped up on a busy and wet Saturday night at UNF’s Hodges Stadium.
The Mustangs were a sliver of the 10 individual championships won by area athletes during a packed final day that included meets in Class 1A, 3A and 4A.

The Mustangs got a title in the 800 from Connor Freeland (1 minutes, 53.66 seconds) to lead the way for Mandarin podium finishers. Sprinter Jaylen Lewis brought home a title in the 200 (20.59) and a state runner-up finish in the 100 (10.41) to push the Mustangs to 46 points, trailing only Miami Columbus (74) in the team standings.
Bartram Trail’s Ethan Fox took the discus state title (184 feet, 5 inches). Flagler Palm Coast’s Colby Cronk was runner-up in the discus but a state champ in the shot put (62-4). In the 4A girls, Creekside won the 3200 relay (9:11.62) to win the lone individual title.
In Class 3A on Saturday, Ponte Vedra’s Katherine Kelly won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 3.75 inches and Mikayla Shavers won the triple jump with a distance of 39-0.5 to lead the local girls winners. For the boys, Westside hurdler Quiny Boyd won the 110 hurdles (14.45)
In the Class 1A state meet, the Providence boys had a fourth-place team finish, earning 43 points to winner Holy Trinity’s 59. Charles Loftin won the 1600 run (4:20.15)
The Providence girls won the 3200 relay for the only individual event winner in 1A.
