For head coach Liam Coen, it was the first step in rebuilding the Jaguars. Jacksonville has a nine-member rookie draft class and a robust 22-player undrafted rookie class.
“It’s been good to get out here. Really just having them in the building, it’s a new couple of days for everybody. Where do they go? Where’s this meeting room? Where’s this located? That all starts to creep in. It’s like being a freshman in high school all over again for a lot of these guys,” Coen said. “The energy’s been good, the guys I heard were doing walk-throughs at the hotel the night before, and hopefully, some of the leadership out of these guys will continue to rise. The energy was good for the last two days.”

No. 2 overall draft pick Travis Hunter was the star attraction at camp the first two days. The two-way star from Colorado won the Heisman Trophy last year and is unquestionably the biggest rookie to ever land with the franchise. Fans were pumped to see Hunter, often letting out audible cheers and “ahhs” when Hunter did something during the limited minicamp.
During Hunter’s media availability after camp Saturday, one fan yelled out from the stands ... “I got season tickets just for you.” Hunter grinned when he heard the fan.
“It definitely feels real,” Hunter said. “Coming out here for this scenery, it’s pretty. It’s hot, it’s what I remember being a little kid out here playing. I love it.”
Hunter worked with the offense during the first two days of minicamp, but Coen said that was by design. The team expects to get Hunter the bulk of his reps as a receiver early on, and spent Saturday smoothing out some things with him that coaches saw that needed refinement.
“Yeah, next week. He’ll be able to get integrated next week on the defensive side of the ball,” Coen said.
Hunter has had a busy week. He graduated from Colorado on Thursday, then rushed to Jacksonville to start his pro career. Hunter wore Jaguars pajama pants under his graduation gown, and that quickly went viral.
“That’s the first thing I ordered off of Amazon when I got drafted,” he said.
The Jaguars continue their offseason program next week. Their next availability is May 19 after their first organized team activity practice. The mandatory veteran minicamp is June 10-12 before the team breaks for a brief time off. Training camp starts in mid July.
