JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Call it luck or maybe fate, Brooke Gosse doesn’t mind.
All she knows is that one trip as a fan to a Bartram Trail girls soccer game when she was in middle school changed the path of her high school career.

Gosse, the Varsity 4 All-News4JAX player of the year, won a couple state championships with the Bears including an unreal title in her final season.
And it all goes back to that one game she saw as a fan. Gosse, in middle school at Pacetti Bay, went to watch a Nease-Bartram game with some friends. When Gosse saw how the Bears communicated on the pitch, how head coach Jennifer Rodriguez worked on the sideline and how Bartram operated as a team, she was hooked.

“This is where I want to play. Like, this is the type of coach I want to have. Like this is the level that I want to be at when I’m their age,” Gosse said.
“I’m grateful that I went to that one Nease vs. Bartram game and got to see them play because I mean, I don’t even know if I would have ever watched Bartram play if I never watched that.”
Gosse enrolled at Bartram as a freshman and spent that year on the junior varsity team. She moved up as a sophomore but suffered a broken leg and had to watch from the bench as the Bears won their third state championship in four seasons behind a senior-heavy group that included two-time player of the year Grace Ivey. Gosse said that year was beneficial to her from a mental capacity because she saw what it took to actually win a championship.
She was healthy as a junior, but the Bears lost to rival Creekside in penalty kicks in the regional finals. The Knights went on to win the Class 7A state championship.
This year, there would be no disappointment. Gosse was exceptional. She and fellow All-News4JAX selection Ali Fletcher were dynamic for the Bears. Fletcher scored the lone goal in the semis in a 1-0 win over Sunlake. In the final, Gosse scored twice and Fletcher nailed the game winner in overtime with 19 seconds left for a 4-3 win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
“I’m getting, like chills thinking about it right now, Actually, that game was the toughest game. I put everything [into it]. I sprained my ankle in the middle of that game and I didn’t even know until two days later because it swelled up,” Gosse said.
“But my adrenaline was so high and I was like, I’m not losing this game. It’s a really bittersweet feeling. I mean, now that it’s all over, it’s kind of sad to think about. But you know, I gave it my all, all four years in the Bartram program and it paid off. Whenever it was my senior year, I had to step up. Obviously, it’s sad, but the best way we went out, I mean, it couldn’t have gotten better.”
