One of the longest state championship streaks in area high school history came to an end in on Wednesday.
The Ponte Vedra boys attempted a final round comeback but couldn’t make the climb and settled for third in the Class 3A state tournament at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-In-The-Hills. The Sharks had won a state record seven team championships in a row, the longest in state history in golf and tied for the fifth-longest among consecutive titles by an area team, regardless of sport.

They were five strokes lower than Lakewood Ranch in the second round but Tuesday’s disappointing start kept them bogged down. Ponte Vedra finished 33-over 609, behind Viera (15-over 591) and Lakewood Ranch (22-over 598). The Sharks were ahead of Beachside (46-over 622) which finished fourth.
Individually, Creekside’s Bryson Hughes finished T5 with an even par 144. Jack Chung and Jake Mason led the Sharks at 6-over 150 for T17. Jaspreet Kondal was the low scorer for Beachside (T25, 9-over 153).
In the girls 3A tournament, Beachside finished fifth with a 51-over 619, 16 strokes behind winner Lake Nona. Sofia River was 6-over 148 for a T15 to lead the Barracudas.
