Lawrence pumped to land with Jags: ‘I know I’m going to love the city’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trevor Lawrence was hoping that it was Jacksonville.

Now, he can’t wait to get started.

The new Jaguars QB touched down in Jacksonville on Friday.

The Jaguars tweeted: “Trevor Lawrence‘s first touch down in #DUUUVAL!”

Fans couldn’t wait to welcome the new player to Jacksonville when he arrived at TIAA Bank Field.

The No. 1 overall draft pick of the Jaguars on Thursday night thanked the community for its passion and goodwill gestures in the lead up the draft and said that he’s pumped to be part of the River City.

“I know I’m going to love the city, so I’m just super excited to be there,” Lawrence said.

Jaguars fans no doubt feel the same way. They’ve been waiting since the team traded Mark Brunell in 2004 to have another franchise quarterback. And they haven’t been shy in letting Lawrence know how much they were looking forward to having him here.

Jaguars fans have been visible and vocal in their support of Lawrence, even during the miserable 1-15 season. When it became apparent that Lawrence was bound for Jacksonville, the First Coast stepped up the pressure.

Jacksonville fans banded together on social media and chipped in to buy a few items off of Lawrence’s wedding registry. The gesture for a high-tech toaster wound up netting not just the toaster, but a $54,000 windfall for local charities.

Lawrence said that he became aware of that gesture a week and a half or two weeks ago.

“I think it just shows how special the community is in Jacksonville and we had seen that kind of in the past before then, but especially, especially then,” he said. “It showed the support that, you know, they had for us and we’re really hoping that was the landing spot. Obviously, that just added to it. Super special community.”

Lawrence said that he and his wife, Marissa, have spoken about how they could be involved in the community that they wound up in.

“Yeah, I think it’s just important to be normal, you know. And that’s one way to do that is by plugging into the community, investing in the community and just caring about the people around you,” Lawrence said.

“And that’s kind of been something that me and Marissa wanted to do wherever we were going to end up. And now that we officially know that it’s Jacksonville, we just can’t wait to get started, and like I said, to plug in and just love all the people around us. So, it’s a lot of fun, and just super excited for it.”
