JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A kitten now has a fur-ever home after Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers jumped into action in the Fairfax neighborhood.

It’s not every day that officers Mike Hubbard and Brandon Magyar along with Sgt. Jordan Busque get called to rescue a kitten trapped in a storm drain on St. Johns Avenue.

But when the call came in, they swooped into action.

The officer said they could hear the kitten calling for help from the storm drain.

“We heard it so we opened it up. We got down in there and the cat was probably halfway through,” Hubbard said.

The officers opened another drain cover but the sound of them pulling the cover off scared the kitten into running further down the pipe.

“All these storm drains connect to one tube, so it was really hard to tell where it actually was, so it was a process of elimination of starting our way down there and working our way further,” Magyar said.

That’s when the officers devised a plan to get the kitten to move closer to the drain opening.

The officers split up at different points to scare the cat in the right direction.

“I shined my flashlight down there. I could see his little eyes. I had no idea that it was a kitten. I thought it was an adult cat that was stuck in there. I see these tiny little eyes in the storm drain,” Busque said.

Busque said she turned off her flashlight and started playing cat noises on her phone to lure the cat closer.

“Sure, enough the kitten ran toward me. Initially, it ran through my feet to this one and I was like no. I kept my flashlight off, and it ended up running back to me and we caught it and it was saved,” Busque said.

Hubbard took the kitten home that night and then to the vet’s office the following morning.

“The cat was healthy. No worms, fleas, or anything like that,” Hubbard said.

After he posted a picture of the kitten on social media, it didn’t take long before someone showed interest in adopting the kitten.

“My neighbor said she and her husband had been looking for a kitten to adopt. They wanted a black cat because they already have a black cat. It was fate how it worked out. She came over and she and her husband fell in love with it and now they have the cat.”

“It’s a positive story for once and we’re just glad we got to help the kitten,” Magyar said.
