In Nassau County, Fernandina Beach voters have said loud and clear that they want to have a say in whether the city implements paid parking in the area.

The supervisor of elections has certified a citizen-led petition to add a proposed ordinance to next year’s ballot that would stop the city from implementing paid parking without a majority approval vote.

The petition earned more than 1,700 signatures. That’s about 600 more than the city requires.

Based on the ordinance in the petition, a paid parking plan would need at least 51% support from voters to move ahead.

City commissioners can either adopt the ordinance directly or allow voters to decide by placing it on next year’s ballot.

A final decision is expected by December.
