JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After Florida voters rejected the last effort to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, the push to get it back on the ballot is already underway.
Supporters are hoping 2026 is their year.
Trulieve, a major supporter, contributed over $144 million to the effort to get Amendment 3 passed last year. That same group is trying again – with a revised version.
The new proposal was filed this week by the Smart and Safe Florida committee.
It addresses issues raised by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who opposed last year’s amendment.
The new proposal prohibits both public smoking and marketing that could be deemed as targeting children.
The initiative also calls for legislation to regulate new marijuana entities, separate from medical cannabis.
The process for getting citizen initiatives on the ballot is one of the issues the governor says needs to be addressed during a special session he’s called for the end of the month.
Supporters would need to collect signatures from 8% of the total number of statewide voters in last year’s presidential election, which is 891,000.
