Kittens by the dozen: Over 60 tiny souls in need of foster homes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Humane Society is calling all kitten caregivers to help foster over 60 kittens still looking for temporary homes.

The shelter says many of these little ones are growing fast and already eating on their own. It will also provide foster families with necessary supplies, whether it’s one night or a few weeks.

On Friday, News4JAX spoke with Lindsay Layendecker, director of development at the Jacksonville Humane Society, for an update on the kitten situation.

As of 12:30 p.m., there were 79 pending fosters, ranging from bottle babies to moms with newborns and older kittens that are more independent. That number fluctuates constantly as more kittens arrive at the shelter and others move into foster homes.

Florida’s kitten season, which kicks into high gear in March, is still going strong. Layendecker said most kittens come from outdoor, unspayed cats.

She added that caring for all these little ones wouldn’t be possible without help from the community.

The Jacksonville Humane Society is located at 8464 Beach Blvd. Those interested in fostering a kitten can stop by weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
