JSO investigating in-custody death of inmate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating the in-custody death of an inmate that happened on Sunday.

JSO said 37-year-old Michael Lavon Barfield was originally admitted to the Pre-Trial Detention Facility on Sept. 4 for drug-related charges and armed trafficking of fentanyl.

Officials said he was transported to a local hospital on Sept. 7 after complaints to medical staff in reference to an existing health condition.

He remained in the hospital until he died on Sept. 21, JSO said.

Detectives are working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the circumstances around Barfield’s death.
