Jacksonville approves $27 million Mormon temple to be built in Mandarin

Plans call for temple to be about 29,000 sq. ft

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The city of Jacksonville has cleared the way for a $27 million, 29,000-square-foot Mormon temple to be built in Mandarin.

According to the Jacksonville Daily Record, the city issued the building permit on Monday for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to complete the project, which is expected to be placed on a 6.6-acre site at 3325 Loretto Road.

There are nearly 173,000 Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons, in over 270 congregations in Florida, according to a news release.

The four other temples that are announced, under construction or in operation in Florida are the Fort Lauderdale Temple, Orlando Temple, Tallahassee Temple and the Tampa Temple.

Latter-day Saints believe that temples are the most sacred places on Earth and differ from churches, which are designated for public weekly worship services.

The church says that at its meetinghouses, all members and visitors are welcome for services and activities.
