CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A chaotic scene unfolded Monday morning in a Clay County neighborhood, leaving two people dead and another two hospitalized after a shooting inside a home on Pine Oaks Lane, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Undersheriff Ron Lendvay said that deputies were called to the home just before 6:30 a.m. and found four people shot inside.
Lendvay said that based on the preliminary investigation, 45-year-old Mauricio Vasco Lopez showed up at the home on Pine Oaks Lane with a handgun and shot three people before someone in the home returned fire, wounding Lopez.

Lendvay said one of the people Lopez shot died at the scene, and two others were taken to the hospital. They were last listed in stable condition.
According to the undersheriff, Lopez was also taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
“Somebody in there helped save some folks,” Lendvay said.
He said at least eight people were in the home when deputies arrived to deal with the “chaotic and challenging scene.”
He said investigators are working to determine Lopez’s connection to the home, if any, and the relationships of all those involved. He said the motive remains unclear.
“I don’t want to characterize it because we’re still going through interviews,” Lendvay said. “We want to get that answer out there, but it’s too early for that.”
Investigators were seen coming and going all day in the neighborhood, while crime scene technicians processed evidence.
“Certainly could have been much more tragic. Somebody in there helped save some folks,” Lendvay said.
At one point… deputies escorted a tow truck carrying an Audi from the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release any information about the victims’ names, ages or genders.
Duval County court documents show Mauricio Lopez was arrested Sept. 11, 2025, in downtown Jacksonville on drug possession and trespassing charges.
According to his arrest report, an officer responded Thursday morning to a car burglary on Dennis Street. Police say Lopez was trying to leave the scene in a black Audi sedan when an officer placed handcuffs on him.
The report states the officer noticed a white powdery substance on the passenger floorboard of the vehicle. The suspect told the officer it was cocaine.
When asked why he was in the vehicle, Lopez said he had been off his medication and didn’t know why he did it, according to the report.
The officer determined nothing had been stolen from the vehicle.
