‘Upload’ signs off: Cast talks closure, representation, legacy of fan-favorite series

Upload” has kept fans laughing and guessing for four seasons with its mix of comedy, romance and sharp commentary on technology. Now, the Prime Video series is coming to a close with a four-part finale that cast members say will deliver long-awaited answers.

Actress Zainab Johnson, who plays Alicia, said she was “on the edge of her seat” when learning how the story would wrap.

“Just like the fans, I was like, ‘Oh my God, who is Nathan going to be with?’” she said. “I feel like we gave them closure. It would have been too diabolical to still not know.”

Since premiering in 2020, “Upload” has built a loyal audience with its futuristic world where people can choose to be uploaded into a digital afterlife. For Johnson, portraying Alicia meant not only comedic fun but also representation.

“Throughout the series, the feedback I got from a lot of Black women and women of color was like, thank you so much for the representation,” she said. “It felt like I was able to see myself in that world.”

She credited the writers for striking a balance between humor and social commentary.

“They did such an incredible job capturing each character’s voice while still keeping this big tech world in the background,” she said.

She said she hopes fans remember the relationships at the heart of the show.

“I want the fans to remember the loyalty between Alicia and Nora, how crazy but understandable Ingrid was for Nathan,” she said. “I wouldn’t be mad if 10 years from now someone stopped me in an airport still mad that Alicia and Luke didn’t live happily ever after.”

All four seasons of “Upload,” including the finale, are now streaming on Prime Video.
