When the deputies arrived, the bodycam footage showed Sweeny walking toward the deputies, who demanded that he put the gun down.

The video showed Sweeny put the gun on the ground, but moments later, it appeared that he tried to pick it back up, prompting the deputies to shoot him out of concern for their safety and the safety of others.

He was given medical aid, but died from his injuries.

The deputies were uninjured.

SJCO said the gun had a live round chambered.

Mailloux and James were put on administrative leave as the investigation continued.
