JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four people, including two children, were transported to a hospital Monday morning following a house fire in the Grand Park neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
The fire was reported around 7:50 a.m. at a home on Sherrington Street, near Division Street.
JFRD said a crew was working at firehouse station seven nearby, when it saw smoke and did what’s called “self dispatch.”
According to JFRD, a mother and her youngest child were transported to the hospital in critical condition. The grandmother and an older child were transported in stable condition.
JFRD said the fire started in the living room.
Patrick Gouin, district chief for JFRD, was the commander over this fire.
“The front half of the house was fully engulfed in flames,” he said. “To think that they were going to pull that many people out and have those people have a fighting chance is just a true testament to what kind of firefighters we have in this neighborhood.”
The home is nearly destroyed. There’s smoke damage throughout the house and the front windows are broken.
Kovarius Jackson, a neighbor of the family, was outside when he noticed the flames.
“I was taking out the trash, and I heard glass breaking and things falling,” Jackson said.
He immediately started calling for help and alerted emergency officials.
Fire units 18, 36, 4, 1, 18 and 5 also helped at the scene.
The cause is under investigation.
