MOSH closes Southbank location to undergo massive transformation, set to break ground in 2026

The museum will reopen its doors in 2028

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) has closed its doors for a while as it prepares for a massive transformation and relocation project.

The museum, which has inspired generations of Jacksonville residents, will remain closed until 2028 when it reopens in a dramatically expanded facility on the Northbank.

MOSH’s history spans more than eight decades, beginning as the Jacksonville Children’s Museum in 1941. The institution evolved over time, becoming the Museum of Arts & Sciences in 1977 before adopting its current name in 1988.

For Jacksonville native Lee Gibson, who grew up visiting the museum, the MOSH was an amazing experience.

“I’ve always loved science growing up,” Gibson said. “It helps instill wonder and desire and just kind of the fun of learning.”

For Gibson’s wife, Katie, the museum played a special role in her introduction to Jacksonville.

“When he was introducing me to Jax, we came and went to MOSH, and I just remember it being really, really awesome.”

The new MOSH facility, set to break ground in 2026 on the Northbank, promises a significant upgrade: Over 7 acres with 105,000 square feet planned for new immersive experiences and exhibits.

MOSH raised more than $95 million through public and private support.

The project has garnered strong community backing, including support from Mayor Donna Deegan and the city council.

While the physical building is closed, MOSH officials emphasize that the institution will maintain its community presence through various events and partnerships during the transition period.

For families like the Gibsons, the wait will be worth it. “It’ll be another 3 years before he gets to go to the new one.”
