Mayor Deegan gives update on ‘express lane permitting’ to fast-track approvals for homebuilders and business owners

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The City of Jacksonville gave an update on its ‘express lane permitting’ system Thursday.

The city says the system helps streamline the civil plan review and permitting process, speeding up approvals for developers and contractors.

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, Public Works Director Nina Sickler and Sleiman Enterprises President and CEO Toney Sleiman attended the event.

The city launched its 8-point permitting improvement plan earlier this year, which included the express lane permitting process.

“We are happy to report that residential building permits are averaging 8 days for the first review and commercial permits are averaging 13 days which are down form our May numbers,” said Sackler.

The city launched two express lane pilot projects to test the expedited processing. The city says the first pilot was a fast-food restaurant and applications were submitted on June 9th, and final permits were issued in less than three weeks. Civil plan permits were completed in 15 days and building permits were issued in 18 days.

The city said the second pilot was also a success and it will move forward with one or two more pilots before filing legislation to make the process official.
