Road improvement milestones set in St. Johns County with SR 16 project start, CR 2209 completion

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County is preparing for two key milestones in its ongoing road improvement efforts in the northern part of the county.

Next week, the county will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to start a $20 million project focused on improving the intersection of State Road 16 (SR 16) and International Golf Parkway (IGP).

This project will include designing and constructing intersection upgrades and installing a fully actuated traffic signal to improve safety and traffic flow. The fiscal year 2025 budget for this project is approximately $24.7 million. It will also see State Road 16 converted two a four lane road from Mill Creek Park to IGP.

Separately the new St. Johns Parkway extension from IGP to Silverleaf is nearing completion. This is a highway that should help ease traffic on local roads and Interstate 95. This project is ahead of schedule and should be complete by the end of October.

“Once that is completed, we just have to do a finished course of asphalt on top of this roadway and we are done,” Greg Caldwell, Director of Public Works, said. “It is a four-lane section, it has a multipurpose path on the west side and will be a whole new north and south corridor when complete.”

That extension will cross over the IGP and connect to State Road 16. The county says this project is still another 6-7 months from completion. The cost of the two separate extensions of the St. Johns Park way/CR 2209 is about 55 million dollars.

These projects are part of broader efforts to enhance traffic safety, reduce delays, and improve connectivity along key corridors in St. Johns County.
