Paw Patrol: Nassau County introduces Max, the gun-sniffing dog as newest back-to-school safety measure

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – Most of us know “PAW Patrol” as an animated series for toddlers, but one of the newest members of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office is bringing the phrase to life.

The sheriff’s office on Tuesday introduced K9 Max, a Fox Red Labrador who specializes in sniffing out guns, as the newest deputy deployed within the Nassau County School District.

Officials said that Max, a 1-year-old originally from England, spent time in West Virginia before making his way to Nassau County, adding that he and his handler, Deputy Brandon Griffith, trained together during summer break to ensure Max was ready for the school year.

In a video posted to YouTube, Max can be seen interacting with the students he swore to protect and showcasing some of his gun detection skills.

“He’s just here to be pet and loved on as much as possible, and it just puts a lot of the kids at ease,” Deputy Griffith said. "As school resource officers, our primary duty is making sure the students and staff are safe, and K9 Max is another tool in the arsenal."

County Sheriff Bill Leeper said Max’s presence will help his office make sure that teachers, students, and schools remain as safe as possible.

“K9 Max will help ensure teachers can teach and students can learn in a safe environment,” Leeper said.

Beyond his training in gun detection, Max is defined as a playful dog who loves working alongside students and staff and is also trained in human tracking and searching for various items.
